CALIFORNIA INITIATIVE
The animals need YOU!
If you live in California, join us for a historic effort at improving the welfare of 20 million farmed animals in the state!

Find out how you can help!
Issue: #3 October/2007

Our thoughts go out to our southern Californian neighbors as dangerous fires ravage hundreds of thousands of acres. Nearly one million people have been evacuated and 1,100 homes burned. We have not yet received information on the number of animals needing help, but are in contact with the southern California shelters. We hope the fires are contained soon.

We face the possibility of natural disasters no matter where we live. We owe it to our companions to be prepared. Read FEMA's article on disaster preparedness for companion animals. If you have livestock or horses, be prepared as well. Find out where other ranches are located or if friends can take in your large animals. In Southern California, cities opened up their beaches for livestock and evacuation sites have opened their doors to people's companion animals.

The San Diego Humane Society has a wish list of needed items, including timothy & grass hay - no pet food, please. Also listed are large and small animal evacuation sites. New Leash on Life needs volunteer help. If you are local, consider donating time. Please call ahead.

Animal Place is working with local area groups in preparing for a natural disaster. Last month, several members of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) came to the sanctuary for a 4-hour training session on caring for and handling livestock.

Rabbits need home!

Rescued from a neglect case, Iris arrived to Animal Place with one baby in tow. Clover, the baby bunny developed splayed legs and, with treatment, is much better. However, Clover still has minor problems getting around and we'd feel more comfortable adopting him and Iris into a permanent home.

These two are VERY bonded, and we would like to place them together. Clover is very friendly and does not mind being picked up or petted. Iris does not like being picked up or touched too much, but we think this may change over time.

Iris and Clover are near and dear to our hearts. We want to see them in a good home that offers a lot of space (no cages, except for bedtime), supervised outdoor playtime and a lot of love.

Both rabbits are spayed and neutered. Iris is at least a year old, possibly older. Clover is approximately four months old.

We'd like to adopt locally within Northern California. If you are interested in adopting this dynamic duo, please contact us at info@animalplace.org or (707) 449-4814
