CALIFORNIA INITIATIVE
The animals need YOU!
If you live in California, join us for a historic effort at improving the welfare of 20 million farmed animals in the state!

Find out how you can help!
Issue: #3 November/2007
Brrr! Okay, so only if you're a Californian (like us) would you consider below 65 F cold. Still, we've been preparing the more warmblooded animals for the cooler temperatures. Our potbellied pigs now have extra insulation and bedding. The big pigs have been burrowing into the three-foot-deep layer of straw, and the poultry spend more time snuggling with one another. The cows, sheep and goats have all grown extra hair and wool for added protection against the elements (no help from us, of course).

We hope you stay warm this coming winter. If you have farm animals, make sure they have extra straw and a secure stall to seek warmth. Some animals may even need blankets to help them cope. And, of course, your companion animals need to come in from the cold too!

Vegan Recipes in Martha Stewart Living

In the December 2007 issue of Martha Stewart Living, in the Healthy Living Section (page 238), there are several scrumptious vegan recipes. They all involve chocolate, which should be enticing enough. Recipes include Grilled Chocolate and Apricot Sandwiches, Hot Cocoa with Almond Milk, Chocolate-dipped Pear, and a mouth-watering Double-Chocolate Cake. You can read the article here.

If you have a moment, please contact the magazine and thank them for including delicious vegan recipes. Tell them you'd like to see more!

Down at the Sanctuary
While fall and winter are associated with cool temperatures and falling snow, for us they mean green. With only a little help from Mother Nature, our once brown landscape is now suffused with new life, providing wonderful graze for all the animals.

The pigs spend hours rooting around, chewing on all the new graze. The goats forage for hours in the hillsides, and the cows love all the fresh grass. Our chickens are preoccupied with scratching in the dirt and stretching their wings for a sun-bath. It's a lovely time at the sanctuary!

In other news, check out Hazel's Piglet Makeover! She goes from squeaky clean to shabby chic in five seconds flat. Visit our blog for pictorial evidence.
