Some groups believe world hunger would end if only we encouraged impoverished nations to be more like us! To facilitate this effort, these non-profits send goats, cattle, pigs, chickens and even crocodiles to poor people in other countries.
Consider the ramifications of these programs:
For the animals: There is no guarantee to their humane treatment, regardless of organizational claims. They are seen as commodities, not as intelligent, emotional beings.
For the people: In Zambia, nearly 100% of the population is lactose intolerant - they can't drink milk without uncomfortable digestive upsets. Yet Heifer International has multiple programs to introduce dairy cattle. Mind boggling.
For the environment: One cow can drink 20-30 gallons of water a day (our cows sure do!) and one pig can drink up to five gallons a day. They eat. A lot. And in areas where desertification is more prevalent and vegetation is already scarce, these animals can do more harm than good.
Rather than making a gift of a goat, consider making a gift
for a goat this holiday season.
Support one of Animal Place's residing animals by giving the gift of a
foster parent package!
