Job Title: Volunteer and Campaigns Coordinator
Job Status: Full Time, Live In, Grass Valley
Immediate Supervisor: Education Director

Position Objectives: The position has three components: coordinate the residential internship program, coordinate the volunteer program and manage outreach campaigns.

Responsibilities and Duties

Residential internship program

  • Coordinate and manage the residential internship program: advertise positions, interview and screen applicants, handle orientations, coordinate weekly enrichment educational program, interface with staff in overseeing interns, conduct exit interviews

Volunteer program

  • Coordinate the volunteer programs: advertise program, handle orientations, conduct training classes, and interface with staff in overseeing volunteers

Intern and volunteer management

  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of the volunteer and intern program and implement improvements as necessary
  • Administer and review policies and procedures that guide the volunteer and intern programs and services
  • Process and retain forms and records to document the volunteer and intern activities
  • Create the volunteer position descriptions in consultation with staff
  • Promote the volunteer program
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to recruit the interns and volunteers
  • Implement intake and interview protocol for volunteers and interns
  • Implement a screening process for potential interns and volunteers
  • Orient and facilitate training of interns and volunteers to increase their understanding of Animal Place, its mission and the role and responsibilities of interns and volunteers
  • Ensure that interns and volunteers are given appropriate training to be successful in their positions
  • Ensure volunteer check-in protocols are followed, and records maintained
  • Ensure that interns and volunteers receive the appropriate level of supervision
  • Assist with conflict resolution among staff, interns, and volunteers
  •  Evaluate contribution of individual interns and volunteers
  • Plan and implement formal and informal intern and volunteer recognition activities
  • Evaluate the risks associated with each intern and volunteer position and take appropriate action to control the risks associated with the program or service
  • Ensure that interns and volunteers work in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations

Campaigns

  • Supervise the Food for Thought coordinator
  • Oversee and implement strategic planning for Food for Thought campaign
  • Plan and implement campaign activities
  • Assist with event planning as needed
  • Interface, network and collaborate with other local and national animal groups as needed
  • Represent Animal Place at events and conferences
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications

  • Interest in and commitment to animal rights and veganism
  • Knowledge of farmed animal issues
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Basic supervisory skills
  • Well organized: set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities
  • Relationship builder: establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization
  • Ability to professionally advocate Animal Place’s positions on issues
  • Solve problems: assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
  • Experience in navigating different social media platforms
  • Self-starter: can work independently; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Previous work in animal protection strongly preferred (paid or volunteer)
  • Personable and friendly
  • Creativity/innovation: develop new and unique ways to improve operations of the organization and to create new opportunities.

Hours: 40hours/week, flexible work schedule 

Salary: Based on experience and qualifications.

Benefits: Housing on sanctuary grounds in one bedroom cottage, medical coverage, paid vacation, and holidays.

Housing: The shared responsibility of employees who live onsite is to help with on-call responsibilities and infrequently handle evening animal care duties.

Job Title: Animal Caregiver
Job Status: Full Time, Grass Valley
Immediate Supervisor: Animal Care Manager

Position: The Animal Caregiver assists in the care of the 300 animals (pigs, chickens, cows, turkeys, sheep, goats, rabbits) living at the sanctuary under supervision of the Animal Care Manager.  Animal Caregivers are responsible for the cleaning, feeding, and medical care of the animals.  See below for specific responsibilities and duties.

Responsibilities

  • Animal feeding/watering and maintaining animal feed schedules
  • Daily animal health care and maintaining treatment records
  • Daily cleaning duties and maintaining the shelter areas
  • Aiding with weekly species health checks
  • Training and supervising  shelter interns and volunteers
  • Assisting with veterinary visits and setting up treatment protocols
  • Completing shelter office projects as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Passionate about working for and with farmed animals
  • Previous farmed animal sanctuary experience preferred
  • Reliable and dependable
  • Good animal behavior and observation skills
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold/wet weather (average low is 35F) and hot summers (average high is 95-100F)
  • Able to lift 30-40 pounds and perform strenuous/manual labor
  • Works well with a variety of people
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Able to follow detailed instructions and meet time sensitive demands
  • Able to learn and process new information quickly
  • Team player and self motivator
  • Comfortable dealing politely with the general public
  • Committed to Animal Place’s mission and a desire to be a part of the Animal Place family
  • Willing to work on weekend/holidays/varying shift times
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record (subject to verification)
  • Comfortable living in a smaller town (next large city is >1 hour away, Sacramento)

Job Description
The part-time Animal Caregiver assists in the care of the approximately 500-2000 laying hens and additional animals, when needed. Animal Caregivers are responsible for the cleaning, feeding, and medical care of the animals.

Qualifications

  • Keen interest in the animal welfare/rights movement is encouraged
  • Vegan preferred (vegetarian minimum)
  • Reliable and dependable
