Help Urgently
Needed with Hurricane Rescue Mission

Kim Sturla, Animal Place executive director, has been in Mississippi all week and has just reported that they have successfully rescued more than 1,000 farmed animals. All of the animals rescued are "broiler' birds (the breed of chicken raised for their meat).

Kim described the grim scene at the factory farms where chickens were rescued;

"The birds had been living out there for 10 days before we arrived so their health very compromised. Just as we were leaving last night -- around 4 am -- we looked into the burial pit (where they were disposing of the dead ones) and saw a cluster of 19 alive hens on top of the dead ones... The ironic part is that these birds are not the hurricane victims. They are the hurricane survivors . It is because the hurricane that we were able to save them. Looking into the broiler sheds and seeing the same site inside there reminded me of the untold suffering chickens raised for meat endure. It is impossible to process that much purposeful cruelty"

Rescued birds were transported to Black Beauty Ranch in Texas to be held temporarily and also to Farm Sanctuary in New York.

One hundred of the birds arrived at Animal Place on September 16! Black Beauty Ranch did a wonderful job of crating the little ones for their journey via Continental Airlines to San Francisco International Airport from Texas.

As soon as we can find homes for these lucky birds, a new group will be transported to our sanctuary.
