Animal Place: Where Magical Things Happen

This book is written by Kim Sturla and illustrated by Eric Sakach. It was published in 1994, through a generous grant from the The Summerlee Foundation, Dallas, TX.

Primarily for children 5 through 8 years of age, it’s the story of how a little girl named Kate falls under the ‘magical’ spell of some very special animals--and one in particular--living at Animal Place. Kate’s brief sojourn at her aunt’s and uncle’s country refuge for once-discarded and ill-treated farmed animals introduces young readers to the concepts of compassion and respect for all creatures. Through Kate’s story, youngsters learn that their caring feelings for animals and the choices they make--including those that represent the vegetarian lifestyle--do count!

Animal Place: Where Magical Things Happen is a wonderful book for children of all ages. Readers will learn about the courage, humor and intelligence of cows, pigs and chickens. And they will also learn how much they haven’t been told about what ‘meat’ really is. Once children realize that ‘ meat’ has a face, they will never look at a piece of chicken, a hot dog or a hamburger in the same way. There is no better book to give to young children to introduce them--in a gentle way--to the idea that knowledge, love and respect should be brought to the dinner table.” --Tom Regan, author
