Darby SonomaDarby Moran interned in animal care at Animal Place during June and July of 2015.

How did you develop your interest in vegan lifestyle?

I have always had a strong passion for animals and even from a young age I knew it was wrong to eat them. I became a vegetarian when I was ten years old and soon after my mom became vegan for health reasons. I knew I would someday make the transition to become vegan.  It was in January of this past year that I finally did and I couldn’t be happier!

Is there a particular animal on the sanctuary with whom you connect?

This is such a hard question because there wasn’t one animal here who I didn’t love. But one of the animals I feel most connected to is Noah the goat. He is such a character, and he can always put a smile on my face! There was one day after his surgery (to remove painful bladder stones) that I was sitting with him in his stall. He was lying down and he put his head in my lap and took a nap. It was the sweetest thing and something I’ll never forget!

Besides animals, what else are you passionate about?

Hiking, climbing, running, backpacking, camping. Really anything outdoors and active is how I like to spend my free time.

Darby IvanWhat advice would you give people interested in transitioning to a vegan diet?

I feel like the best advice I could give someone is to just do it! Don’t be afraid to start. And nowadays there are so many alternatives to meat and dairy that it’s really not hard at all. Do it for the animals. Do it for yourself. And do it for the environment. You will not regret it!

Have you learned anything in your internship at Animal Place that you can apply to a future career or your home life?

I have learned so much in my two months here at Animal Place! I am studying Pre-veterinary science at Arizona State University, so being able to see and help with health checks was such an amazing opportunity! Also just being able to see all the animals in a happy environment where they belong, and having the chance to connect with each one of them is an opportunity I am so thankful for. It really strengthened all the beliefs I already had about veganism and animal rights.

Do you have any advice to anyone interested in applying to the Animal Place internship program?

I spent my summer in the Animal Care department here at Animal place and it was probably one of the best summers I’ve had. It is hard work, but so rewarding and so worth it!
