| 13 Dogs Rescued from Horrific Conditions in Juarez, Mexico |
Our latest group of rescued dogs arrived from Juarez, Mexico on August 21st. All 13 dogs were rescued from a Mexican "Antirabico" , (the equivalent to an American animal control facility), where dogs are either surrendered or rounded up off the streets and warehoused until they are killed via electrocution or strychnine injections.
Christi Payne, Animal Place resident and dog rescue coordinator, visited the Antirabico while in the impoverished border town organizing a week-long free spay/neuter clinic through the organization she cofounded, Compassion Without Borders. Over 218 animals were sterilized in just four days.
Conditions at the Antirabico were atrocious. Dead animals, in various stages of decay, were left in large pens with live animals. Dying and convulsing animals were left unattended to, mixed in with healthy animals and puppies. Nursing dogs were thrown in the crowded pens with their day-old babies. Carcasses littered the cement walkways between dog runs. |

In this picture you can see three dead dogs blocking the water bucket for the live animals in the pen at the Juarez Antirabico. Many of these dogs appeared to have been dead for several days. |
Christi selected 13 of the healthiest, most "adoptable" dogs from the Antirabico , bathed and "de-ticked" them, had them vaccinated and examined by a veterinarian, and then she and Juan Ramon Camblor drove the lucky group all the way back to Animal Place - a 20 hour trip with lots of stops for potty breaks and walks.
Christi, who has been working in spay/neuter and rescue work in Mexico for several years, reports that this latest rescue was one of most emotionally satisfying of her life and that the conditions the dogs were in were amongst the worst she has ever seen. |

Chucho and Adela: Chucho and Adela were found amongst a pile of dogs in the back of a truck parked at the Antirabico. The dogs had been in the truck for several days - with no food, water, or shade. The frightened group of dogs were huddled in a corner- many were ill and two had already died.
Christi picked over 100 ticks off of Chulo's four pound body the day he was pulled. Adela was also tick infested, matted, filthy, and had a tight bundle of copper wire digging into her neck. She was so frightened she wouldn't move. Within four days of being rescued the two dogs had regained all their physical strength and had begun to seek out affection and wag their tails. They are now both nearly fully recovered and are enjoying V.I.P treatment by staff and volunteers at the sanctuary. |

| Ruby: Little Ruby is an adorable terrier mix with a playful spirit. She is constantly on the prowl for food treats - but prefers snuggling above all. |
Rosie: Little Rosebud is a Chihuahua mix who is about five years old. She is a very sophisticated older gal who is incredibly alert, well adjusted, and bright. She radiates dignity and charms anyone who lays eyes on her. |
| Frida: Frida, a black and white 10 month old doll-pie, was found in a large pen at the antirabico - scared to death, covered with mange and with a large wound on her left rear leg. She is undergoing treatment for her skin condition and wound, has already begunt o regrow her hair and is beginning to look quite lovely! |

Camila: Dogs just don't come any cuter than this adorable little 8 pound terrier mix. Her personality is every bit as adorable as her physical exterior ! |
Diega: Deiga was found at the Antirabico in a very large cage that held roughly 20 other dogs. Diega caught Christi's eye because she moved akwardly in the pen - she kept running into the cage and into other dogs -causing them to snap and growl at her. It became obvious that Deiga could not see.
Diega appears to have recovered a bit of her vision since her rescue, but will remain partially blind for life. However, for this remarkable young dog, this is hardly a handicap. She moves around confidently, manouevers incredibly well, and is one of the happiest, most gentle dogs of the entire group - her little Cocker tail never stops wagging a mile a minute! She is a truly special soul. |

Jasmine: Jasmine was covered with motor oil and ticks when she was rescued. She was incredibly thin and it was obvious that she had been nursing a litter -- although no live pups were in the cage with her at the time of her rescue. Jasmine has taken a bit longer than the other dogs to open up and trust us - but she is finally coming around and is now a delightful dog with a soft personality and a deep desire to bond, play, and be loved. |
| Alfi: Alfi is a silly little poodle/terrier mix who loves to play, play, play. He was very scared for the first 24 hours after his rescue - but then, very suddenly, just let his guard down and is now a happy, carefree, silly dog. Alfi was covered with matts when we rescued him, but was taken to a groomer and is now looking as good as he feels. |

Layla: Layla is a very bright, energetic terrier mix. She loves to play fetch and to rough- house with the other young dogs. Layla was also covered with motor oil and ticks when she was rescued, but cleaned up nicely and is an absolute joy. |
| Annie: Annie had a cord tied so tightly onto her tail that it had begun to rot off. She had to have her tail surgically removed, but has recovered very quickly and seems to be doing just fine. She is a goofy gal who steals your heart in seconds. |

Viola: Viola is an absolutely adorable 4 month old Boxer pup who had been reportedly dumped at the antirabico because of some mange she had developed on her face. When we rescued her her entire face was bald - but she has already recovered a great deal of hair and is doing great. |
| Chula: Chula is an adorable border collie mix who wants nothing more than to be loved, petted, and re-assured. She is a sensitive dog with a heart of gold and eyes so sweet none of us can resist her adoring gaze. |
