Each
year, the California legislature introduces bills that positively and
negatively impacts animals. This year is no different. There are several
bills that would increase penalties for animal fighting and animal
abuse, prohibit the sale and possession of shark fins, and stop the
needless sale of live animals in certain areas.Helping animals is as easy as picking up a phone, writing a letter or email to legislators. Each correspondence you make represents thousands of other constituents who chose not to contact their legislators. Your voice is powerful.
If you live in California, check out our legislation page and start contacting legislators today. Remember, the animals cannot speak, so be their advocates. It's never been easier!

Washington Initiative To Give Room To Hens
Nearly six million hens in Washington live in cages so small they cannot spread their wings. Battery cages are egregiously cruel confinement methods, prohibiting chickens from engaging in normal behaviors. A ballot initiative started by Washingtonians for Humane Farms seeks to implement an initiative that would require hens have enough space to stand up, lie down and stretch their limbs without touching the sides of their enclosure.
Animal Place supports the initiative with the caveat that endorsement not be construed for acceptance of raising chickens for egg production. As animal protection advocates strive to create a more compassionate world through veganism, all routes toward that goal should be considered, including ballot initiatives.
You can help hens across the country and globe by simply not eating eggs and, when feasible, adopting chickens as companion animals through our Rescue Ranch program. If you want to learn more about a vegan diet, sign up to receive our free Going Vegan pamphlet.

Heartbreaking photographs from South Korea show live pigs being dumped into large holes and buried alive. Outbreaks of foot and mouth disease and avian influenza have resulted in the brutal, painful deaths of more than 3.5 million animals.
Korea Animal Rights Advocates (KARA) estimate 90% of the animals killed have been buried alive (warning: there are photos at the linked site showing fully conscious pigs being buried alive).
