| Winona was one of more than a million laying hens trapped without food or water after a tornado destroyed the building in which they were housed at the Buckeye Factory Farm in Ohio. Like the millions of other hens at this farm, they were crammed in tiny wire cages. Volunteers were able to rescue only a few thousand of the hens before the rest were killed by bulldozing. Winona and several hundred of her 'sisters' were taken by Animal Place and are now thriving in their new home. |

Eve is a merino sheep who was tied up outside a gas station, destined to be killed and eaten after she was ‘fattened.’ As a result of her cruel treatment, she was confiscated by humane authorities and donated to Animal Place to live out her life with others of her kind. Eve is part of the Foster Parent program. |

| Brenda Grace was one of many ‘production’ pigs born with hernias. The farmer had a deal with a veterinary medical school whereby the students would do the surgery and, if successful, he would buy back the pigs. The two students who were assigned to this pig, however, could not bear the thought of her becoming ‘food.’ They were able to convince their instructor to allow them to find a sanctuary for her instead. In honor of these two students, we named Brenda Grace after them |

Gilbert was found 'hog-tied' in a backyard, on a hot day, without food or water, destined to be slaughtered. Although his companion did not survive, Gilbert was able to pull through the horrific condition and is now doing very well. He is still very small for his age and cannot be left out in the pasture without supervision. Gilbert is part of the Foster Parent program. |

Howie - weighing in at about 2,000 pounds - is both our largest and arguably most charismatic resident. Howie’s mother died giving birth to him and he was dropped into a night box at an animal shelter when he was just hours old. Shelter workers wanted to raffle him off to folks who planned to raise him for slaughter. Animal Place intervened and demanded that the orphaned calf be given a chance to live his life out in peace at our sanctuary. Howie has been with us for over 7 years and spends his days grazing the hillsides, hanging out with the other animals, and getting into trouble whenever possible! |

Lemonade, is a recent rescue from a cruelty case in a neighboring county. Lemonade has an intense sense of curiosity, is very friendly and outgoing, and is always first to try and actually wiggle his way into the produce bucket as we hand out the fresh veggies every night! |

Lucky is a 13 year old pot-bellied pig rescued from a shelter that got him from Animal Control. Lucky is a gentle older fellow who takes pleasure in the simple things in life – like tummy rubs and his daily juice and food treats! |

Jessie is a beautiful older cow who has been with us at animal place for 15 years. Jessie saved her own life when she jumped out of a truck (speeding along the highway) on her way to slaughter. The driver of the truck gave her to some kind folks who saw the incident. They brought her to Animal Place where she has had an active life of grazing, hanging out with the other animal residents, and being free. |

Sebastian is a young goat rescued from a large cruelty case – just a few miles away from our sanctuary. Sebastain came to us in very poor conditions – thin & ill, his face and nose were covered with dried mucous and his spirits were very low. However, with a few months of T.L.C. he was soon on his way to the happy, healthy, lovable soul he is today. |
