Alix Pulido interned in animal care at our rescue and adoption center in Vacaville, CA for two months. You can see some of her videos of the experience here.
How did you develop your interest in a vegan lifestyle?
I was vegetarian for about 5 years and never really thought about my food choices. I thought by not eating meat I was helping the animals. Then one day I decided to try veganism. Once going vegan for health reasons, I made the decision that I was going to commit and threw out all non vegan products shoes, jackets, toiletries. After reading countless articles and binge watching videos (such as Vegucated, Earthlings, Cowspiracy, 101 Reasons to Go Vegan, Forks Over Knives) the health reason went out the door and I became an ethical vegan.
Is there a particular animal on the sanctuary you connect(ed) with?
While at Animal Place’s Rescue Ranch I felt I a strong connection with Rufus and Reggie, two goats rescued from a shelter. At first I was kind of scared of them because of their horns, but in no time I was hugging and kissing them. They became my friends and I still really care for them.
Aside from animal rights, what else are you passionate about?
I enjoy creating arts and crafts, DIY’s, cooking, youtube videos, painting, decorating, I am happiest when I am able to be creative.
What advice would you give people interested in transitioning to a vegan diet?
I say find what interests you about veganism and go with that . There are so many benefits in going vegan whether it be health, environmental or ethical or simply becoming a better person.
Have you learned anything in your internship at Animal Place that you can apply to a future career or your home life?
In the future I would really like to make chickens and goats a part of my family. Animal Place taught me how to care for them whether it be cleaning up after them, how to treat illness or how they need to be put to bed. I am happy to have the knowledge so I can properly care for these animals.
Do you have any advice to anyone interested in applying to the Animal Place internship program?
Be prepared to work hard, and be prepared to fall in love because you are going to meet so many great animals it will be impossible not too.
