Live-In Operations and Shelter Manager

BACKGROUND
Animal Place is a farmed animal sanctuary for 400 animals including cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, sheep, goats, donkeys, and rabbits. We extend compassion to all life with a special emphasis on farmed animals. Our permanent 600-acre sanctuary is in Grass Valley, CA and our Rescue & Adoption Center is in Petaluma, CA.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Oversee the maintenance of buildings, land, and fleet of 10 vehicles. Interface with all contractors. Work closely with the Animal Care Director in assisting with animal care duties.
Management
– Plan, organize and prioritize daily and weekly tasks
– Identify areas needing repair and plan to carry through
– Supervise and manage contractors
– Oversee and help volunteers supplying maintenance services such as carpentry, painting, and landscaping.
– Keep all buildings and grounds safe by making sure they meet building code requirements.
– Supply a weekly status update on all projects to Animal Care Director
– Keep records of all maintenance repairs
– Prepare budgets and work scopes for contracted maintenance activities
Animal Care
– The Operations/Shelter Manager is part of the Animal Care team, and therefore, will be spending approximately 50% of their time performing animal care duties ranging from feeding and cleaning to medicating the animals.
– Along with the other 4 caregivers living on site, the Operations/Shelter Manager will be responsible for sharing on-call shift duties
Buildings
– Hire out work related to the maintenance of buildings (i.e., plumbing, electrical, etc.)
Land
– Oversee outside contractors who mow, trim, weed whack, and other landscaping tasks
– Maintain NID (Nevada County Irrigation Ditch)
– Assist in implementing fire prevention protocols
Maintenance
– Keep fencing, gates and latches maintained
– Keep property neat and trimmed
– Oversee annual maintenance of fire extinguishers
– Coordinate repairs of all appliances located on Animal Place property
Vehicles
– Coordinate fleet maintenance
– Keep logs on vehicle service and repairs
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS
– Proven organizational skills and good record keeping
– Managerial experience
– Strong observational skills to recognize areas needing attention
– Ability to create and work within a budget for all maintenance related issues
– Work independently and as part of a team
– Ability to lift 30 pounds
– Ability to work in a variety of outside conditions for extended periods of time
– Physically fit to manage frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting
– Valid Driver’s License
– Safety conscious
– Physical stamina
– Maintaining plant-based diet while living on sanctuary property
BENEFITS
Housing: 2-bedroom duplex on sanctuary grounds, including utilities; commitment to plant-based diet on sanctuary property required
Salary: $52,000 to $62,00 depending upon experience for full-time (40-hours-a-week) position
Paid time off: 2 weeks of vacation, 6 holidays, sick time
Medical: Health insurance with no deductible, available after 90 days.
403B: After 1-year of employment, Animal Place matches up to 3% of salary
