Meet a Real Humane Hero: Mary Love

I sat down to chat with Mary Love, a generous Animal Place supporter. Mary is a down-to-earth individual, who has a deep love and respect for animals. She isn’t sure how she first came across Animal Place, but the animals are glad she did!
Growing up on a ranch, animals were a huge part of Mary’s life. When reflecting on her childhood, Mary shared fond memories of spending time with horses and dogs, noting “Interacting with them is what made me happy”. Whenever she left the house, she looked forward to coming home to the animals. Now, she shares her home with two beloved dogs Dancer and Ebony and 7 cats.
When a friend showed her the cruelties of animal agriculture, her love for animals grew into a deeper desire to protect them. She said “I had a friend who opened my eyes to the cruelty and from then my eyes got bigger and bigger.” It is clear from the way Mary talks about animals, she views them as equals, stating “Animals have every right to their life as we do and they should be respected”.
When asked about her relationship with animals, Mary shared “They’re complete individuals. They’re not objects. They’re no different than I am. A different body, different brain, genetics and instincts. But, they wish to be respected as living creatures.” We couldn’t agree more.
Kim Sturla, Executive Director, is grateful for all the help she has given to Animal Place. Her generosity helped to purchase the Rescue and Adoption Center in Petaluma and she recently made a $25,000 matching gift to help build a small dog barn for adoptable pooches. “Mary is an integral part of the Animal Place family. The staff and animals thank her!”
