We are writing to request that you use your authority to condemn the cruelty occurring at wild cow milking events at Rowell Ranch.
Cattle are prey animals by nature. A chaotic rodeo arena with a screaming audience is an extraordinarily stressful environment for these docile creatures. Being chased on horseback and violently brought to a halt by a rope around the neck is not only frightening, it’s dangerous. Severe neck injuries involving cattle roping rodeo events are not uncommon by any means. In fact, in 2014, the Rowell Ranch’s wild cow milking event ended in tragedy when a terrified cow broke her neck and had to be euthanized.
In addition to being stressful and dangerous for animals, the wild cow milking event is simply distasteful. As public opinion surrounding animal welfare issues continues to evolve and shift into a more progressive light, more people find such events to be distressing and upsetting rather than enjoyable.
Impressionable children who attend rodeo events with their families can become insensitive to animal suffering, learning that it is acceptable to disregard an animal’s wellbeing for our own entertainment. As animal advocates and rescuers, we firmly believe in teaching compassion, not apathy, to both children and adults. We hope that you feel the same, and will do the right thing by protecting vulnerable animals from senseless and unnecessary cruelty.
