A week ago, a dog and cat shelter asked us to take in a goat named Gilbert. He had been a “shelter goat” for four years. The weekend prior, stray dogs attacked him and his friend.
Gilbert’s friend had to be euthanized. 😭 Gilbert was left with multiple bite wounds on his back legs. He was moved to a safer location and seen by a veterinarian.
💔Unfortunately, he did not receive the wound care required after a dog attack.
You see, when dogs attack, they often cause deep muscle tears and wounds that can lead to severe infections.
By the time Gilbert arrived at our Petaluma adoption center, you could smell the stench of infection and death coming from his leg. It was horrific. We immediately had a mobile veterinarian come out. She sedated Gilbert, flushed the wound, and recommended that he go to UC Davis.
Gilbert was brought in as an emergency to UC Davis, where he is currently receiving the treatment needed to recover from this horrific attack.
Here is how your donation will help Gilbert, who will likely need to spend 1-2 weeks hospitalized:
- Your $15 gift keeps Gilbert pain-free
- Your $25 donation goes toward daily wound management and care
- Your $100 donation helps cover the cost of overnight hospitalization
Gilbert is stable and has an excellent chance at recovery, now that he is receiving proper care. While we believe the shelter tried to do well by Gilbert, this is another example of how differently farmed animals are treated. Had Gilbert been a dog, he would have been rushed to a hospital immediately.
Despite all he has been through, Gilbert is incredibly sweet and social with humans.
Any support you can provide for Gilbert is deeply appreciated. You are part of a community of animal lovers who believe goats like Gilbert deserve the same level of care you would give a dog or cat in need.
Without you, there is no us. With you, Gilbert is safe.
