Our President and Co-Founder, Kim Sturla, sat down with the Top Dog Podcast to talk about the story behind one of the country’s longest-running farm animal sanctuaries.
Kim traces her path back to Zelda, a young pig found as a stray decades ago. Caring for her led to a realization that reshaped everything: “There was nothing different between Zelda and my dogs.”
She also makes the case that rescue alone was never the whole job. Sanctuary tours, vegan cooking classes, museum exhibits, and immersive programs exist because, as Kim puts it, “education was as important as saving lives.” And she’s clear that guilt isn’t the goal — feeling bad for animals doesn’t change anything on its own. Compassion has to go somewhere.
Kim also reflects on what nearly forty years of nonprofit leadership have taught her about perseverance, servant leadership, and celebrating small wins alongside a team that’s all there for the same reason.
