It is no secret how far veganism has come in the past decade. Once it seemed that tofu was the best option on a vegan menu. Now there are decadent faux meats, cheeses, and even eggs! Many major fast-food chains have added plant-based options that provide an animal-friendly choice for consumers. A study performed by GlobalData showed that veganism in the United States rose from 1% in 2014 to 6% in 2017. In 2020 we see evidence that veganism continues growing at a rapid rate.
This year major awards shows chose to serve fully plant-based menus at their events. On January 3rd, 2020, the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards was the first of its kind to serve a completely vegan menu, stating that “For the first time the meal served to our guests will be entirely plant-based – a way to focus awareness on the need to countenance sustainable lifestyles as our world moves towards climate and environmental insecurity.”
Many others followed the example of the Golden Globes including the 25th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards and the 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. On January 27th, the 92nd Annual Academy Awards followed suit and offered a completely plant-based menu.
Leaders set an example by taking animal products off their menus. This is a huge win for animals, people, and the environment. We look forward to seeing the rise of veganism continue in the years to come.
