4/10/2015 – **Update!

Verna is doing well! She has been integrated with the goat herd. The other goats love her, especially Mr. G! Her incision site is still healing.

april 9 2015 Verna A (1 of 1)

For 18 hours, heavily-pregnant Verna suffered. Intentionally bred at only 7-mos-old – a baby herself – Verna could not physically give birth to the large male kid inside her.

The “owners” of the goat would pay to have her shot but not to see a vet.

Neighbors called Animal Place and staff rushed to the scene, finding Verna – weighing only 30 lbs – down, her pregnant belly heaving from pain. Rushing to our veterinarian, it was determined the baby was too large and Verna would need an emergency C-section to survive.

The stench coming from inside Verna was almost unbearable, infection had set in and dead tissue was decomposing. All because someone saw Verna as ‘property’ and not someone worthy of basic veterinary care.

Verna’s kid was already dead. Both would have survived had Verna been taken to a vet sooner.

Our focus shifted to Verna and the possible damage done. Intravenous antibiotics and fluids were given. Verna had stopped eating during her painful attempt at delivery and her digestive system suffered. The first 24 hours were touch and go, with her small body going into shock fighting off infection.

Verna is on the road to recovery, and she needs your support to continue thriving.

-Marji Beach, Education Director

Please donate toward Verna’s recovery and care. The c-section itself cost $450 and Verna requires expensive antibiotics and special feeding to regain her strength and weight. A gift of $25 offsets the cost of her medically necessary surgery and pays for one antibiotic treatment.

thanks for helping this poor baby!!!!!! screwd up owners!!

    • Linda Shifflett says:

Thanks for helping God’s helpless creatures. What monster could do this? No wonder I like animals better than people!!

    • barb says:

It is cruel and sick when people do this to an animal. It is horrible. There is no sense to this. This is cruelty. Owners should not be allowed to get away with this.

      • Stella K. says:

What a cruel thing to make an animal suffer and wait like that. The result is that this goat lost the baby, not sure if it would have been a safe birth. Not the point though. We need to be there for our helpless and defenseless animals. What are these Sub-Humans thinking to do such a thing? You should NEVER own animals again. The same thing should be done to you, and I hope that happens. This country is too liberal though.

    • paul says:

RIGHT DUDE GOD HAVE SAVED HER AND AS FOR THOSE ASSHOLES I HOPE GOD WILL PUNISH THEY SERVERY.

  2. diane sacchetti says:

Isn’t this animal cruelty. Can’t the ‘owners’ be prosecuted?
Horrible, unfeeling… How can these things be allowed. They should be held responsible!

    • Animal Place says:

      Hi Diane,

Unfortunately it was a life or death emergency situation and animal control would have been too late to intervene. We’re not certain any charges would have been filed, given the “owners” were planning on shooting her – which is legal to do, sadly.

    • Terri says:

I think the owners need to receive exactly what they had planned to do to this lovely little girl.

  3. Gloria Jones says:

I’m just starting to work, but I’m going to be able to donate starting next month. I know that Verna will most likely be helped by then, and I pray that she will be up and about VERY soon. Will you keep me updated about her? In sorry to hear about the baby though.

    • Animal Place says:

      Hi Gloria,

Yes, we will keep everyone updated on her progress. She has made it through the worst of it and her progress is steadily improving!

Thank you so much for your kind words and support.

Hi, Thank you for your rescue of a goat.
I would like to donate, but could not find a specific site for her.

Paypal goes straight to a general donation site.
Please send an information so that I could help her recover.

Thank you very much again !!!

  5. This burns me up:
” Intentionally bred at only 7-mos-old – a baby herself – Verna could not physically give birth to the large male kid inside her.”

This is animal cruelty and should be considered a crime. Those who impregnated this young goat should be ordered to pay her vet bills and future care.

    • Terri says:

That burns me up too! We get our pets spayed and neutered by 5 months of age and here are people intentionally trying to breed a goat who is just a baby herself. They don’t see her as a living being- just a thing they can use. Sickos! I am so glad they saved her.

    • Alexis says:

I agree , completely .Those owners/monsters should pay ALL VET BILLS !!!

  6. Orpha Dess WIlsoon says:

Thank you so much for that awesome rescue…I take it the baby was dead~You do wonderful things, wish I was near you to volunteer.

  7. Patricia says:

This is just heartbreaking on the one hand but so happy she is safe with Animal Place now. I’d be excited to see how Charlene reacts to having another pygmy goat in the herd when the time comes. I’m sure it will be a long while for that to happen. Will make a donation.

  8. Donna Nelson says:

Thank you for rescuing sweet innocent Verna and i am so sorry for the loss of her kid! Bless you and prayers! It’s very sad that this is allowed to happen and nothing can be done about it.

  9. Stephanie says:

Thank you for helping this Lil Angel please get from vegas

  10. It is comforting to know that people like you are there in times of this kind of cruelty. These people should not be allowed to own these animals if they don’t take proper care of them. To do what they did to this poor baby goat is simply disgusting. I can’t send $25.00 but I’ll see what I can do. Thank you for rescuing her.

  11. Robyn says:

Thank you, Animal Place Rescuers, for doing the work that some of us can’t do, and others won’t do. You are our heros, and it’s obvious the animals feel your love and compassion. I’m only too happy to give a little to help out. Best wishes for Verna’s speedy recovery!

  12. kat says:

A happy ending for this goat.Sadly people think shooting ends the pain.Really need to educate people regarding humane treatment of their farm animals.Your santuary is wonderful!

  13. Ann Crosby says:

I am so moved by this story. We visited your wonderful sanctuary in December and hope to come back next year and see the wonderful work you are doing…. and maybe Verna, too!

    Thank You.

    • Animal Place says:

Please do! Verna is hanging out in the chicken barn with her own stall and small outdoor enclosure (we need to keep her completely isolated from the other goats.) Stop by and send her some love!

  14. Gloria Wilson says:

Thank you for all you do…..

  15. Ann McGarry says:

It is unthinkable that the “owners” would allow this little goat – a baby herself- to be impregnated at this age and then let her suffer like this. They are monsters who should be imprisoned. What a disgrace! Our laws need to be changed.

  16. Patricia Pacheco says:

That really broke my heart to see that poor little baby suffering. Her former owners are the ones who need to be shot! I just now donated what little I could spare. I wish I were a millionaire to help out even nore. God bless you for your kindness. Little Verna is in good hands now. Thank you!

  17. Marcia Mueller says:

That poor little one. I just wish the baby could have been saved also but an so very thankful for the intervention by Animal Place. The people who would let an animal suffer like that are contemptible. They’re probably at the emergency room at the first sign of trouble themselves.

  18. Barbara says:

It seems we need to change the law if it is true that this poor animal could be legally shot after such cruel treatment.
How can we just accept it is legal when clearly it is cruelty?

Yes, I know a lot of other cruel things are legal but we can start somewhere.

  19. Dwinna Barker says:

Farm animals are treated so horribly! It’s like these people don’t think they even have any feelings!!! How can they eat dinner, go on with their daily life when a poor little innocent and helpless animal is in such pain without helping her??? Shame on them!!!! This kind of thing goes on everyday. Farm animals are tortured to death all over the earth and we have got to demand it be stopped!!! We have got to scream at all our elected reps and demand that it be stopped and that they quit protecting the monsters!!!!!

  20. Cori says:

Thank God there are people that care. Heartbreaking story and can just say thank you for saving her life. I made a donation and whether it goes to her care or another animal, I know it will be appreciated. Bless you and Animal Place!!!!!

  21. Leigh says:

So glad you could help Verna! Poor baby! Thank you so much for all of your hard work and selflessness with the animals.

  22. julia richardson says:

thank u for saving her life… such a beautiful animal… sorry her baby didn’t make it.

  23. Maria Elena Rodriguez-Hooks says:

I can’t stop the tears streaming down my face. My God! How can people be so cruel…how can people have no regard for helpless animals? I guess I was born in the wrong world….I wish I had been born in a benevolent world full of love and peace.I am definitely in the wrong world. Thank God for those caring people who took care of her and feel so bad for her unborn baby. I hope the people that allowed this are prosecuted…what state did this take place. We have to spread the word around and contact the people who run this town and make them accountable if they do nothing about this situation. The people who allowed this to happen (male, female????) should never be allowed around animals again. They should be in prison forever and be subjected to the same pain this poor animal endured. I hope this goat enjoys his life to the fullest surrounded by loving people. Has this gone on social media yet? We have to do something. I’m sending a donation right now. If you can’t afford $$$ at least get the word out and write letters/emails, make phone calls, tie up their phone lines, do whatever to make this hick town responsible for their lack of action against these sickos.

    • Carolyn Jenkins says:

Oh thank you Animal Place for saving the beautiful goat’s life – Hmmmm, perhaps we should shoot the previous owner?? That wouldn’t cost as much as his food, etc. for just one day?

I at this moment cannot afford to send any money but will send your web-site to many of my friends. Thank you once again.

The goat will not be returned to him will it? Carolyn

  24. Julie Amato says:

Talk about heartbreaking….hard to believe anyone could do this to a baby goat with her first baby…and she’ll never be able to have another one…very sad. What’s great is that Animal Place stepped up and took care of her before it was too late….thank you, thank you. She’s beautiful….I’ve contributed to her vet bills, and would love to be updated on her progress….Amen.

  25. Karen says:

Just curious, ding surgery in those conditions seemed perfect to add to the problem of infection, looked very primitive. Also, taking her home instead of leaving her at a vets were she could have fluids, be kept warm….all looks very primitive surgically.

    • Animal Place says:

      Hi Karen,

C-sections can and are often performed onsite at farms and could have been done at our sanctuary. We were not going to risk a transport of more than an hour to get her to a surgical center when we have a competent vet with the appropriate surgical supplies and disinfectants.

Verna had an infection from being left in labor for 18 hours, not because of her c-section. She is already on the mend and is healing well.

Thanks for your concern – we always have the best interest of the animals at heart and chose a vet we work consistently with and a close clinic.

  26. Claudia says:

    Thank you!

  27. Teri Forester says:

Trying to share on Facebook. Link is not working. Want to give others the opportunity to donate toward Verna’s care. Was able to tweet, but that’s less effective in reaching my circle of friends.

  28. Marie Bevilaqua says:

Thank-you for saving this little baby goat! Can you please provide me with the Animal Place mailing address so that I can send a check? I appreciate it!
    Best Regards,
    Marie

  29. Dawn Anderson says:

Thanks for capturing precious Verna’s rescue on video. How gentle and caring the two staff girls were in her rescue, plus the emergency veterinary care, just exactly what she needed.

I love you all at Animal Place!!!

  30. Susan Craig says:

Thank you so much for saving this precious goat’s life.

  31. Charlotte voigt says:

It was great what you did.I am unemployed if I had money I would love tyo makeva monthly donation to your facility.I hope you prosecuted those responsible. That was cruel what they did to her

  32. Candee Gordon says:

It is so unbelievably sad how humans can be so cruel to animals. These owners are a perfect example of this cruelty and abuse. Thank you so much for rescuing Verna, Animal Place. I’ve donated to Animal Place before because I am very familiar with the wonderful work you do for animals. Here’s another example of that. I’m donating $50 right now so you can continue to do this wonderful work. I hope other will follow because this work would not be possible without donors. Thank you. <3

  33. Candee Gordon says:

Everyone, please donate and then, watch the youtube video of Mr. G and Jellybean. You’ll see more of how wonderful Animal Place is and you may even cry when you see the reunion of Mr. G and Jellybean. It’s a wonderful story of how animals feel love and friendship for one another.

  34. Laurie says:

Thank you for rescuing Verna. I’m sad that she suffered so much, and that her child passed away. You did great work to help her and give her a new happy life.

  35. Judy Goshman says:

I can’t begin to say how much it means that you rescued Verna. I can’t imagine how people can have such unimaginable cruelty. Poor little Verna endured so much pain and then lost her baby but thanks to a caller and your willingness to step out and rescue her she is alive and healing now. I am unable to work and on disability so rarely have extra funds to contribute but wish I was able to send you something to help Verna and all the rest of the work you do. Thank, thank, thank you for having hearts that are full of love and compassion for these animals.

  36. Heidi says:

Im glad Verna was saved, I am sorry her baby wasn’t. These horrible people need to be executed to torture this poor animal knowing what she was going through. I hope she enjoys a long and happy life now.

  37. Kat Karnes says:

God love Verna’s little heart~~so very sorry she lost her baby because of those non-caring, hateful owners who let her suffer for so long and then lose her baby. Many, many thanks to the wonderful rescuers for their compassion~~we need more like them in this mean old world. The subhumans who let Verna suffer like she did should never be able to own another animal for as long as they live~~they are mean, non-caring pieces of crap who don’t deserve to live and breathe the same air as these precious animals.

  38. Wanada says:

What a relief to see that help came ! Bless you and all in the organization. Wished these emergency calls never came. The owners should be charged with negligence and animal abuse.

  39. Jeanny Pontin says:

Why should money be more important than Life? I will never understand.

  40. paul says:

We are saving verma i cry that she lost her son i happy that animal place and with all of us who pay for her health are blessed by god and hope she someday have another child.

As for those idiots they are SICK people why did they end up with animals in the first place? they do not care for any life what so ever even themselves that’s all they think about is kill. I wish some day or
sooner god will bless me with financal help and i can save the farm animals here of animal place.org and gentle barn.org too

  41. pam bolton says:

why is not the owner charged with animal cruelty for this. He clearly refused vet care for her and she almost died because of it, her baby DID DIE. There is no excuse for this. Press Charges.

  42. Birgit Ditto says:

Thank you so much, for helping the goat.
It’s a shame that the baby had to die!

  43. Leanne Woodall says:

This video had me in tears. Once again we see the polar opposite sides of our human race: those who neglect & abuse innocent animals and the wonderful, caring people (like those at Animal Place) that go out of their way to see that animals are treated with compassion and are protected. Thank you Animal Place for the awesome work you do each & every day! Today is my birthday & I’m sending the money I would have used on a dinner out to assist with sweet little Verna’s care. Please give her a hug for me!

  44. Donailah Santos says:

Sending my monetary help your way towards Verna’s medical fund. Can you please answer a nagging question I have? I read your reply to a comment that it would have been legal for these owners to put her down. I was wondering if these people are in a position to continue this barbaric practice? Do they own more pygmy goats?

  45. Suzanne says:

I do not understand the mentality that some people have towards animals. They care nothing about their health & well being and care nothing about their sufferings. They do not value animals’ lives except for how they can exploit them. This is so wrong!
I thank the kind, compassionate people at Animal Place for once again stepping in and saving an innocent animal’s life. God bless all of you!

  46. Susan Fairweather says:

What can one say? We must keep striving to change the law globally so that animals are acknowledged as living beings with rights. Thank you for saving this dear little goat – she will have a good life now.

  47. Ellen says:

I am happy that this sweet goat was saved! Thank you! I highly doubt if her owners have the money for a vet bill that high. Regardless, shooting a goat should be illegal! Are there no laws governing age of a goat getting impregnated with the intent of selling the offspring, etc.?

I wish Verna the best. I truly hope that legal action is taken against these people since they are responsible for veterinary care for their animal. She could have died too. Poor Verna.

  48. susan dandorf says:

I am so glad Animal Place exists. Wish there were more organizations like yours to help so many animals in need! I will do what I can with donations to help out. Thank you all at Animal Place and to those behind the scenes that help out monetarily.

  49. […] This is Verna, a pygmy goat that Animal Place rescued from some evil people who let her suffer for 18 hours in labor. Her ‘owners’ were willing to shoot her but not to take her to vet. If they had taken her to the vet earlier, the kid would have survived. This is what happens when animals are treated as property. Animal Place rushed her to the vet and paid for her C-section and ongoing medical care. She is isolated from the other goats until she is fully healed. You can read more about her story (including another video) and donate to her medical care here. […]

  50. Tami Novak says:

I just donated. I think it went to your general site, but that’s ok. Thank you for being the kind people you are. The world is a better place because you’re in it! 🙂

  51. paul says:

very sexy goat and a very pretty face

hugs and kisses from me and the other 68 people who cares for her
