Picture this: A full week in a spacious 2-bedroom, 3-bath townhouse at High Point World...

In 2010, we welcomed a year old bull. Originally stolen from his mom on a dairy, he ended up abandoned at a horse boarding facility. Holsteins are large animals. They tend to live shorter lives than their smaller counterparts. But Murphy defied the odds, living 17 years, 16 of them here at sanctuary. Murphy was the boss man of his herd, but he was also kind to other orphan calves. Murphy was not a fan of people but he was a fan of treats, hay, and his meds hidden in a bowl of pellets. On his last day, Murphy said it was time. He simply lay down and did not get back up. We made him comfortable and free of pain, and after a visit from a veterinarian, we helped him pass. Dairies never let male calves live this long. Only sanctuaries do. If you want to help animals, go vegan. We will see you in the stars, Murphy. Do not gore anyone.

On September 19, we held our inaugural Humane Hero Hoedown—a day dedicated to celebrating the compassionate support of our monthly donors who sustain our sanctuary year-round. It was a festive day of connection, food, and fun! Guests were welcomed with a delicious fall-inspired plant-based lunch by @vegan.circus.carnival.food and dessert by @sugar_plum_vegan, while live music by local musician Stephen Yerkey set the perfect tone throughout the day. Before guided sanctuary tours and pavilion activities (painting and lawn games) commenced, Humane Heroes connected with their meaningful impact through speeches, followed by a Q&A session with leadership. After the tours, we drew winners for our 12 fantastic raffle prizes. Thank you to our generous sponsors for providing raffle prizes: @crockerart @fatandthemoon @madhippiebeauty @muirstearoom And a huge thank you to every Humane Hero, guest, and volunteer who made this such a special day!
