Sascha is forever in our hearts.

He tried his best but the damage was irreparable....

Two of our sheep are in the hospital and need your help. Sascha is in critical condition with a severe antibiotic-resistant lung infection. His half-brother, Remy, is by his side with a disorder called megaesophagus. Recently, we noticed Sascha acting off. We consulted with our mobile veterinarian and began treatment. Sascha did not respond, and we rushed him to Loomis Basin Equine, a 24-7 emergency hospital, for further diagnostics and care. Sascha arrived in respiratory distress, requiring nasal oxygenation (the tape on his face keeps the tube attached without interfering with eating). Further tests revealed severely compromised lungs and fluid in his chest. His veterinary team drained fluid and put him on heavy-duty antibiotics and pain management. Sascha may not make it. We should all prepare ourselves for the possibility. But Sascha has not given up and, as of right now, neither will we. Remy was set up in a pen next to Sascha, who perked up and got as close to Remy’s pen as possible. He started eating, drank water, and looked brighter than he had in days. To be clear, Remy’s presence cannot cure a bacterial infection…but it IS improving Sascha’s welfare immensely…and when your heart is being cared for, it can free up space for your body to heal. The veterinarians have been honest with us; none of this may work. Sascha’s lungs and organs may simply be too damaged to fix. But you know what? Sascha is telling us to try. As animal care director Meg sat with him, he pawed her with his hoof and ate the treats she brought with great enthusiasm. Sascha and Remy’s bills stand at $12,000. Supporters have raised $9,000 of that! To provide this level of care costs $500-700 per day, and that is why we are asking for your help. Remy is okay. Megaesophagus means that a part of his esophagus is so wide that hay can get stuck and cause an obstruction. While he has to avoid hay for the rest of his life, he can still eat fresh grass and watered-down pellets. To keep Sasha’s spirits up, Remy will remain at the hospital with him. Please support Sascha and Remy.
